What do these foods have in common? Well, they make you drool a bit because they’re awesome. And you probably avoid these foods because you’re getting to a certain age and afraid of clogging your arteries.
What if I told you that you can and should be eating these foods?
Feed your Brain
Your brain is comprised of mostly saturated fats, other fats, and cholesterol. When you deprive yourself of saturated fat, your brain just doesn’t work as well!
Improve your Testosterone Level
Feeling a bit sluggish in your old age? Eat more saturated fats and create some more testosterone!
Saturated fat is a calorie dense nutrient, with nearly twice as much energy per gram when compared to carbohydrates. Fuel your brain and fuel your body!
Consuming foods higher in saturated fats help you lose weight! There are several reasons for this, but one of the key reasons is that foods that are high in saturated fat are so nutrient dense that they make you feel full. Foods higher in carbohydrate often cause an insulin response that leads to further cravings!
As I established in a previous blog, one of the main reasons that so many believe saturated fat to be evil is based on the work the sugar industry did to demean it. By blaming fat for obesity and associated health issues, sugar and carbohydrates became the healthier nutrients. But now that you know about this conspiracy, isn’t it time to take another look?
The Bad Fats
Once the word got out that butter was bad for you, companies worked quickly to come up with alternatives. One of these alternatives is margarine. Notice how you can barely find margarine anymore? Margarine is a trans fat. Trans fats are basically just ‘tasty evil.’ Trans fats are very difficult for the body to break down, so they get stored, clogging the arteries, and making it difficult for your body to function normally. Trans fats are slowly being outlawed in this country, but they aren’t gone yet! Just remember:
Butter = Saturated Fat = Awesome
Margarine = Trans Fat = Poison
Trans fats also make up many fried foods and ready-made treats at convenience stores. Beware!
So I can eat as much as I want?
Of course not! But as we’ve talked about in previous blogs, maybe that’s the wrong way of looking at it! Because foods high in saturated fats are nutrient dense, they satisfy cravings in ways some other foods can’t. So it may be tempting to eat a ton of steak, it’s just very difficult. Especially compared to something like a bag of Lay’s potato chips. No, you can’t eat as much as you want, but you may get full and need to stop anyway.
Do saturated fats clog my arteries and cause heart attacks?
No, they don’t. They just don’t.
But I should still stay away from full fat dairy and drink skim milk right?
No, you shouldn’t. Full fat milk is awesome. And there’s no increased risk of heart attack or stroke. So why are you torturing yourself?
